Agric Minister Credits Feed Ghana Programme for Nationwide Bumper Harvest

Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has attributed the country’s ongoing bumper harvest to the government’s Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as proof of the initiative’s success.
His comments follow growing concerns from farmers across several agricultural communities, who say they are struggling to find ready markets despite producing food in large quantities.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, Mr. Opoku said the complaints of excess produce are not isolated cases but rather a reflection of a nationwide glut.
“The farmers in many parts of the country are complaining that they have produced in quantities beyond the market there, and they are not getting buyers… What is happening now is a nationwide bumper harvest that Ghana is experiencing,” he said.
Mass Participation in Agriculture
The minister explained that the Feed Ghana Programme was designed to drive widespread involvement in agriculture. The campaign encouraged households to create backyard gardens, senior high schools to establish school farms, and faith-based organisations and state agencies to make use of fertile lands.
“So far, 129 SHS are participating in the programme. We also have churches and other organisations that have directed their branches to cultivate available lands. Even state agencies are participating,” Mr. Opoku revealed.
Government’s Role and Outlook
While acknowledging that agriculture is primarily private-sector-led, the minister emphasised the government’s role in creating an enabling environment. He highlighted favourable weather conditions and proactive policies as factors that helped boost production.
“We anticipated this outcome at the beginning of the programme. The results are a bumper harvest, and this will intensify in the coming months, especially as produce from the northern belt is yet to enter the market,” he added.
The bumper harvest, while a sign of progress, also underscores the need for stronger market linkages, storage facilities, and value addition strategies to ensure farmers fully benefit from their increased output.
