Ghana Launches Commercial Operations on Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line

The Ghana Railways Development Authority (GRDA) has officially commenced commercial operations on the Tema–Mpakadan railway line, marking a major step in the country’s rail transport revival.

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the first Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU)—one of two recently procured by government—departed the Tema Harbour Railway Station with passengers on its maiden trip to Afienya. The train made scheduled stops at the Tema Industrial Area and Ashaiman stations before arriving at Afienya at 9:39 a.m.

A Transport Milestone

Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who joined the inaugural return trip from Afienya to Tema, described the launch as a landmark achievement in Ghana’s transport sector.

He explained that the new line will ease road congestion, reduce travel costs, improve cargo efficiency, and cut down on road accidents, while creating jobs and spurring economic growth.

“This is part of a broader plan to expand rail infrastructure across the Western, Eastern, and Central corridors,” the minister said.

Affordable and Seamless Service

GRDA Managing Director, Dr. Frederick Appoh, announced competitive fares for passengers:

  • Tema – Afienya: GH¢15
  • Afienya – Adorme: GH¢25
  • Tema – Adorme (full route): GH¢40

He also revealed that operations on the Accra–Tema line, which were suspended for repairs, will resume on Monday, allowing passengers to connect easily from Accra to Mpakadan.

Passenger Reactions

Commuters who joined the maiden trip praised the new service.

  • Mohammed Dawda, who boarded at Ashaiman, urged authorities to ensure regular maintenance of the trains for safe operations.
  • Emmanuel Amadoe commended the clean, well-maintained coaches, describing the experience as comfortable and refreshing.

Strategic Importance

The 97-kilometre standard gauge line, inaugurated in November 2024 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is part of Ghana’s strategy to modernise its rail network.

It is designed to integrate with Volta Lake transport, enhance freight movement, and boost trade with Burkina Faso and other neighbouring countries, positioning the railway as a critical pillar in Ghana’s transport and logistics system.
