Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that every region in Ghana will have a passport application centre by December 2025, a move aimed at decentralising services and making passport acquisition more accessible nationwide.
Speaking at a ceremony where five distinguished Ghanaians — travel vlogger Wode Maya, Grammy-nominated reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, broadcaster and entrepreneur Anita Erskine, contemporary visual artist Ibrahim Mahama, and British-Ghanaian entrepreneur Dentaa Amoateng MBE — were presented with diplomatic passports, Mr. Ablakwa outlined the reforms underway at his ministry.
He disclosed that the first of the new centres will be commissioned this month in Bolgatanga, paving the way for the full rollout across all remaining regions.
Passport Reforms
According to the Minister, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has already achieved major progress in transforming the passport application system. Applicants now receive their passports faster, with the added convenience of home delivery through courier services, reducing stress and eliminating the need to physically pick up passports at collection centres.
“The Foreign Affairs Ministry has become very efficient, and Ghanaians are already confirming that now it is a smooth process. They are receiving their passports in record time and do not have to stress to pick them up at passport offices, because they are being delivered via courier services,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.
Despite these improvements, he acknowledged that seven regions currently lack passport application centres. He assured that this gap will be fully closed before the end of the year.
National Impact
The establishment of new centres is expected to reduce travel burdens, cut processing delays, and enhance equity in access to passport services, particularly for residents outside major urban areas.
