Chairman Wontumi to Report to CID Over Akonta Mining Probe

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.
This development follows a warning issued by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, on Friday, October 3, indicating that Chairman Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to appear, as charges against him have already been signed.
Investigation Into Akonta Mining
The summons is linked to ongoing investigations into Akonta Mining Limited, a company associated with the NPP chairman, which is under probe for alleged illegal mining activities.
Dr. Ayine explained that the case had faced delays due to missing dockets that were reportedly concealed under the previous administration.
Wontumi to Honour CID Invitation
In an interview with Citi News on Sunday, October 5, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that his client would honour the CID invitation.
“We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, which we are ready for, and we will be there at 10 a.m. at the police CID headquarters,” Mr. Appiah-Kubi said.
He, however, described the Attorney General’s public warning as unnecessary, emphasizing that his client has always cooperated with investigators.
“This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. I said we respect the invitation and we will honour it, but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary. We are not in any way going to disrespect the invitation,” he stressed.
