Chairman Wontumi’s Trial Set for October 7 Over Alleged Illegal Mining Activities

The trial of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, following his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday, October 6, 2025.
This comes after the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, issued a directive on October 3, warning that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to report, as charges had already been approved against him.
Chairman Wontumi faces charges linked to alleged illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining Limited, a company reportedly associated with him. He has since been granted bail set at GH¢1 million.
Accompanied by his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, Wontumi appeared before the CID and later commended both the police and the Attorney General’s Office for their professionalism during the process.
“I want to congratulate the police system for showing professionalism. We also want to thank the Attorney General for facilitating the entire process,” he stated.
Confirming the nature of the charges, Wontumi said they relate to “mining without a license,” adding that he looks forward to clearing his name in court.
“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not to maintain innocence, but we are allowed to proceed and then present our defence,” he said.
