Stonebwoy Calls for Revival of Ghana Airways

Afro-dancehall superstar Stonebwoy, born Livingstone Etse Satekla, has called for the revival of Ghana Airways, the country’s defunct national airline that ceased operations two decades ago.
In a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on October 6, 2025, the award-winning artiste appealed to authorities to restore the iconic airline, describing it as both possible and necessary.

The Fall of Ghana Airways
Founded in 1958, just a year after Ghana’s independence, Ghana Airways served as the nation’s official carrier. The airline was established as a joint venture between the Government of Ghana (60%) and the British Overseas Airways Corporation (40%).
The carrier operated successfully for several decades before succumbing to financial and operational crises. By 2004, it had accumulated debts exceeding $160 million and was plagued by mismanagement, overstaffing, and inefficiency.
In the same year, the U.S. Department of Transportation banned Ghana Airways from flying to the United States due to safety violations, citing the use of unsafe aircraft and expired licenses. The airline was eventually liquidated in 2005 after the government opted not to inject further funds into its operations.
Efforts to Revive a National Carrier
Successive governments have since made several attempts to establish a new national airline, but none have yet materialised. Stonebwoy’s recent post has reignited public discussion about the need for Ghana to once again have a national carrier that represents the country on the global stage.
Many social media users have since rallied behind his call, urging policymakers to revisit plans for a sustainable and proudly Ghanaian airline.
