Ghana international Kamaldeen Sulemana has made his long-awaited return to action after spending several months on the sidelines with a knee injury.
The 24-year-old winger made his comeback on Thursday night, coming off the bench in the 84th minute to replace Nicola Zalewski as Atalanta played out a 2-2 draw against Fiorentina in Serie A.
Sulemana’s return marks the end of a frustrating spell away from football after he suffered a knee injury during a pre-season friendly against German side Schalke 04.
The injury was diagnosed as a second-degree tear of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee, forcing the Ghanaian to undergo an extended period of rehabilitation.
His absence was a setback for both the player and Atalanta, who had been without one of their attacking options for several months.
However, his return to the pitch will provide a timely boost for the Italian side as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the season.
Sulemana joined Atalanta from English club Southampton last summer and made a positive impression during his first campaign, scoring three goals and providing two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.
The former Rennes winger will now be eager to put his injury troubles behind him, regain full match fitness and establish himself as an important figure in Atalanta’s attack once again.
For Ghana, his return will also be encouraging news as the winger looks to rediscover the pace, direct running and attacking threat that have made him an exciting presence in European football.
After months of rehabilitation and uncertainty, Sulemana can finally look forward to getting back to what he does best, playing football.
