Armed men block Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, attack passengers

A group of armed men blocked the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi in Ghana’s North East Region, reportedly setting a vehicle ablaze and attacking passengers amid the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict. The assailants, wielding AK-47 rifles and other weapons, were allegedly stopping vehicles to identify passengers from Bawku, specifically looking for members of the Kusasi ethnic group.

The incident occurred shortly after the conflict in Bawku reignited on October 26, with rising tensions spilling into surrounding areas. One survivor described the scene, recounting how armed men blocked the road, burned tires, and checked identities to determine ethnic backgrounds. “They were looking for Kusasis,” the survivor explained, adding that they were allowed to pass after clarifying they were not Kusasi. The survivor also saw others being assaulted.

Gbimsi, a predominantly Mamprusi area, is now experiencing spillover effects from the Bawku clashes. Authorities have not yet commented, as attempts to reach the North East Regional Police Command have been unsuccessful.
