Ghana’s gospel music legend, Yaw Sarpong, passes on this morning at Emena Hospital in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
The iconic gospel singer passed away on Tuesday, 20 January 2026. His death was confirmed by his manager and family sources while he was receiving medical care.
Sarpong was widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in Ghana’s contemporary gospel music scene, particularly in Akan gospel music.
Under his leadership, he became known for disciplined arrangements and deeply Christian lyrical content.
The group produced numerous beloved songs, including Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa, which remain staples in Ghanaian churches.
In 2025, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in recognition of his contributions.
Earlier reports noted that he had been dealing with health issues for several years, occasionally withdrawing from public life to focus on treatment before his passing.
This news comes only weeks after the death of Maame Tiwaa, a respected member of the Asomafo group and close collaborator with Sarpong, who died in **December 2025**.
