A fire broke out at the Madina Zongo Junction part of the larger Madina Market area. The blaze gutted three shops on the ground floor of a one-storey building.
Ghana’s National Fire Service responded urgently with units from the Madina and Legon Fire Stations after the distress call came in at about 4.30pm.
The Fire was brought under control and fully extinguished it by around 17:25pm.
Two shops were partially damaged by the fire with no casualties or injuries while one shop was completely destroyed.
It’s because of the quick response of the emergency services that helped prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation since Madina Market is one of Accra’s busiest trading hubs and any disruptions affects thousands of local traders and patrons.
Fire incidents have occurred at Madina Market before, often leading to calls for improved safety infrastructure and emergency access.
