Wunmi Mosaku win a BAFTA Film Award for her performance as Annie in Sinners, a critically acclaimed musical-horror film.
The British-Nigerian actress beat out strong competition from Carey Mulligan (The Ballad of Wallis Island), Emily Watson (Hamnet), and others.
Her win marks another major milestone in her already celebrated career, which includes previous BAFTA recognition on TV.
In her acceptance speech and press remarks, Mosaku spoke about how playing Annie helped her reconnect with parts of herself she had “tried to dim,” especially in terms of ancestral identity and representation, a theme that has resonated strongly with audiences.
She dedicated the award to her daughter and talked about the meaningful response from Black women who felt “seen, loved, valued and treasured.”
Her victory also made history as she became the first Black British winner in the Best Supporting Actress category at the film BAFTAs.
The film Sinners was one of the big winners of the night — also scoring BAFTAs for Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score — and has been praised for blending musical, vampire-thriller and dramatic elements.
Mosaku has built an international career across film and TV, including roles in Luther, Black Mirror, and the Marvel series Loki. Before this win, she already had BAFTA TV success and film award nominations to her name.
