The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has successfully intercepted two trucks transporting large consignments of unapproved and dangerous substances in the Kaleo.
The operation, conducted on Sunday, February 1, 2026, targeted two Rhino Kia trucks with registration numbers GS 5699-18 and GC 1871-11, which intelligence indicated were bound for Burkina Faso.
A thorough inspection of the vehicles uncovered:
- 58 cartons of foreign cigarettes
- 182 cartons of unapproved pharmaceutical drugs
- 40 drums of sodium cyanide, a highly hazardous chemical
According to NACOC, the substances were being transported without regulatory approval or proper documentation, raising significant concerns for public safety.
“The items which were bound for Burkina Faso were being transported in two trucks with registration numbers GS 5699-18 and GC 1871-11… officers acted on actionable intelligence to intercept them,” the statement read.
The drivers and their assistants have been handed over to the Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service for further investigation and potential prosecution.
NACOC described the seizure as part of intensified efforts to prevent the illegal movement of dangerous chemicals, smuggled pharmaceuticals, and other contraband across northern borders, underscoring the risks such substances pose to health, safety, and regional security.
Authorities emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and cross-border intelligence-sharing to curb similar incidents in the future.
