Haruna Iddrisu: Free SHS Will Be Enhanced, Not Abolished

Education Minister-Designate Haruna Iddrisu has dispelled rumours that President John Dramani Mahama intends to cancel the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, affirming instead the government’s commitment to refining and expanding the programme.
During his vetting before the Appointments Committee on January 20, Iddrisu reassured Ghanaians that the Free SHS policy, introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration, will be reviewed and improved for greater effectiveness and inclusivity.
“President Mahama has no plans to cancel Free SHS. He has consistently stated his intention to expand and enhance it,” Iddrisu stated, emphasizing the government’s dedication to aligning the policy with constitutional provisions that guarantee educational access for all.
Iddrisu announced plans for a stakeholder forum to involve educators, policymakers, and experts in discussions aimed at strengthening the education sector. The review will focus on addressing gaps, ensuring sustainability, and maximizing the programme’s benefits.
This assurance comes as the government seeks to ensure that Free SHS continues to fulfill its purpose of providing quality education to Ghanaian students.
