USAID staff will be put on leave starting on Friday

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced that, effective Friday, February 7, 2025, nearly all of its direct-hire personnel will be placed on administrative leave. Exceptions will be made for staff involved in mission-critical functions, core leadership, and specially designated programs. This move is part of a broader initiative led by the Trump administration, in collaboration with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to streamline federal operations and reduce government spending.

The decision has sparked significant concern among lawmakers, former officials, and international partners. Critics argue that the suspension of USAID’s activities could have severe implications for global humanitarian efforts, potentially endangering lives and compromising U.S. national security interests. Protests have erupted in Washington, D.C., with demonstrators expressing alarm over the potential dismantling of the agency.

Elon Musk, appointed to lead DOGE, has been granted substantial authority to implement cost-cutting measures across various federal agencies. His approach has included offering financial incentives for federal employees to resign and accessing sensitive government systems to identify areas for reduction. While the administration asserts that these actions are necessary to eliminate wasteful spending, legal experts and lawmakers have raised questions about the legality and ethical implications of Musk’s role, given his extensive private business interests.

The suspension of USAID operations is expected to have immediate and far-reaching effects on international aid programs, including those addressing health crises, food insecurity, and disaster relief. The full impact of this decision remains to be seen as the situation develops.
