Croydon hosted a dignified flag-raising ceremony on 6 March 2026 to commemorate Ghana’s 69th Independence Day, bringing together community leaders, dignitaries, and members of the Ghanaian diaspora to celebrate the nation’s historic milestone. The ceremony took place at the Forecourt of Croydon Town Hall on Katharine Street, highlighting the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and the United Kingdom.
The event formed part of the global celebrations marking Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule in 1957, a moment widely recognised as a significant chapter in African history. The ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including His Worshipful the Civic Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Richard Chatterjee, and the Ghana High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, who was represented by Brigadier General John Ayakwa, underscoring the occasion’s significance within the diplomatic and Ghanaian diaspora communities.

The ceremony was hosted by Ambassador Vicky Newton, who welcomed attendees and reflected on the significance of Ghana’s independence and the continuing role of the diaspora in strengthening cultural and community ties.
