Lydia Akanvariba Vows to Strengthen Digital Reforms in Public Sector

Accra, February 25, 2025

Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, the Minister of State-designate for Public Sector Reforms, has pledged to enhance and expand digital platforms introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration to improve accountability and efficiency in government operations.

Speaking during her vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, February 24, Akanvariba reaffirmed her commitment to leveraging technology to transform the public sector.

“I do believe digitalisation is the way to go. Some work has been done on the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System and the current payment system, but that is not enough,” she stated.

Key Areas of Focus

The Minister-designate outlined her plan to strengthen existing digital platforms, including:

  • Ghana.GOV – the government’s central digital services platform
  • Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) payment system – enhancing efficiency in tax collection
  • Paperless Port System – improving trade facilitation and reducing corruption

She also highlighted infrastructure gaps within public institutions such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), which lacks adequate computing resources for smooth digital operations.

“There are offices or departments that don’t even have enough computers. They don’t have workable computers that you can just transfer from one file to the other,” she noted.

Commitment to a Digital Public Sector

Akanvariba assured that her reform agenda would focus on modernizing public services and ensuring that digital platforms remain efficient, accessible, and impactful.

“It’s my responsibility to continue from where you [Akufo-Addo’s administration] started and make the public sector efficient, modern, and robust,” she concluded.
