President Mahama Pledges Government Support for Adum Fire Victims

Kumasi, Ghana – March 21, 2025 – President John Mahama has assured traders at Adum in Kumasi of government support following a devastating fire that destroyed numerous shops in the Central Business Centre on Friday, March 21.

During his visit to the affected area, President Mahama received a briefing from fire officers and directed the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to provide immediate relief to affected traders.

Government’s Intervention

In addition to NADMO’s intervention, the President announced that he would engage the Chief of Staff and the Ashanti Regional Minister to explore further financial assistance for the traders.

“I have directed NADMO to assist affected traders, that is in the interim. We will also discuss with the Chief of Staff together with the Ashanti Regional Minister to also support the traders,” Mahama said.

Fire Incident & Response

The fire, which broke out at ‘Blue Light’ in Adum, reduced scores of shops to ashes. Reports indicate that some shop owners risked their lives in an attempt to salvage their goods, despite warnings from firefighters and police officers to stay away.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing an explosion before the fire intensified, suggesting the presence of combustible materials in some of the affected shops.

A distraught shop owner expressed frustration over the firefighting efforts, stating:

“The firefighters have not done enough to kill this fire,” he told TV3’s Evans-Nkum.

Next Steps

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, government authorities are expected to outline further measures to support victims and prevent future disasters in Kumasi’s commercial hub.
