Pitch Invader Sentenced to 100 Days in Prison After Disrupting Ghana-Chad Match

Accra, March 25, 2025 – A 21-year-old football fan, Mohammed Huzeinu, has been sentenced to 100 days in prison by an Accra District Court for invading the pitch during Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, 2025.
Disrupting the Game and Consequences
Huzeinu’s unauthorized entry onto the field disrupted the match, causing concerns for player safety and potential financial repercussions for the Ghana Football Association (GFA). International governing bodies such as FIFA and CAF impose fines of at least $10,000 for such security breaches.
The GFA has strongly condemned the incident, emphasizing the importance of discipline and adherence to match-day regulations to avoid financial penalties and safeguard Ghana’s football reputation.
Security Breach and Arrest
The chaotic moment unfolded when Huzeinu sprinted onto the pitch, seemingly attempting to embrace Black Stars striker Antoine Semenyo. However, security personnel reacted swiftly, removing him from the field and arresting him. He was subsequently detained at the Ministries Police Station before being arraigned in court.
Growing Concerns Over Stadium Security
This marks the fifth pitch invasion at a Black Stars match in the last five years, adding to concerns over stadium security in Ghana. Similar incidents occurred during Ghana’s AFCON qualifiers against Angola and South Africa, both of which resulted in financial penalties.
Authorities hope that Huzeinu’s sentencing will serve as a deterrent, reinforcing the importance of orderly conduct at sporting events and protecting Ghana’s standing in international football.
