UK Appoints Christian Rogg as New British High Commissioner to Ghana, Set to Assume Office in July 2025

ACCRA, April 17, 2025 — The United Kingdom has officially appointed Mr Christian Rogg as the next British High Commissioner to the Republic of Ghana, with his tenure expected to commence in July 2025. He will succeed Ms Harriet Thompson, who is set to take up a new assignment within the UK’s Diplomatic Service.

The announcement was made by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, highlighting Mr Rogg’s extensive background in development economics and diplomacy.

A Familiar Face Returns to Accra

Mr Rogg is no stranger to Ghana. Between 2006 and 2009, he served as Head of the Governance and Growth Team at the UK’s former Department for International Development (DFID) in Accra. This prior experience has given him deep insights into Ghana’s political, social, and economic environment, making his return a notable diplomatic homecoming.

A Career Spanning Continents

Currently serving as the Director for Development and Open Societies at the FCDO since 2023, Mr Rogg has previously held roles including Director for Development, Parliament, Coordination and Capability (2021–2023). His career portfolio features key assignments in Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom.

Before joining the FCDO, his professional journey also spanned the private and academic sectors, with roles at Merrill Lynch, the Inter-American Development Bank, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and academic positions at the University of Oxford.

Strengthening a Strategic Partnership

The UK-Ghana partnership has continued to deepen across sectors such as trade, security, climate resilience, and education. Mr Rogg’s appointment is expected to build on this momentum by infusing fresh energy and strategic continuity, thanks to his prior engagement with Ghana and broad African experience.

Farewell to Harriet Thompson

Ms Harriet Thompson, who has served as High Commissioner since 2021, is widely credited with fostering stronger diplomatic and economic ties during her tenure. While her next posting remains undisclosed, the FCDO acknowledged her contributions to strengthening UK-Ghana relations over the past four years.

Looking Ahead

As Mr Rogg prepares to step into his new role this July, diplomatic circles in both London and Accra anticipate a period of renewed collaboration between the two nations, with particular emphasis on governance, sustainable development, and economic partnerships.
