Ghana Police Deny Detention of Officers Over Alleged Arrest of Judge, Say Reports Are False

ACCRA, April 24, 2025 — The Ghana Police Service has strongly denied media reports alleging that four of its officers were detained for arresting a circuit court judge over a traffic offence, describing the claims as “false and without merit.”

In an official statement signed by Superintendent Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Head of Public Affairs at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Service clarified that no officers had been detained in connection with the incident.

Background to the Controversy

The clarification comes in response to reports stemming from a petition submitted on April 7, 2025, by a circuit court judge, who alleged that on December 13, 2024, four officers from the Adenta Divisional Police Command, led by Inspector Godwin Dey, had:

  • Harassed her
  • Assaulted her court clerk
  • Wrongfully towed her vehicle from the Adenta Court Complex to the police station

The judge further claimed that she received no formal response after lodging a complaint with the Adenta Divisional Police Command.

CID Response and Clarification

According to the statement, the CID initiated an investigation into the matter and invited three officers to provide written statements:

  • Inspector Francis Adjei (No. 53349)
  • General Sergeant Dasebre Oti Boateng (No. 53852)
  • Corporal Jonah Ajubulisa

Superintendent Darkwah emphasised that:

“At no point were the officers detained as has been falsely reported. We therefore urge the public to disregard the publication and treat it as false and without any basis.”

Due Process and Police Commitment

The Ghana Police Service reiterated its commitment to due process, promising a thorough investigation into the allegations made by the judge.

The statement also reaffirmed the Service’s support for officers who lawfully perform their duties, while making it clear that any misconduct would be appropriately addressed.
