NPP, Other Political Parties Unite to Protest Suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo on May 5

ACCRA, Ghana – April 25, 2025 — A coalition of political parties, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced a nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, May 5, in opposition to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The coalition, which includes the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others, held an emergency meeting on Thursday, April 24, where they finalized plans for the demonstration.

In a strongly worded joint statement released on Friday, April 25, the coalition described the suspension as a blatant violation of Ghana’s constitutional framework and a threat to judicial independence.

“The blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy,” the statement read.

Background to the Suspension

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo on Tuesday, April 22, after a prima facie case was established regarding three separate petitions seeking her removal. Acting in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, the President made the decision after consultations with the Council of State and has since formed a five-member committee to probe the allegations.

However, the coalition of parties believes the action was politically motivated and part of a broader pattern of judicial interference under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

“The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. A case in reference is the NDC’s failed plot in 2010 to remove Ghana’s first female Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood,” the parties alleged.

A Call to Defend the Constitution

Organisers of the upcoming protest say it is not just a partisan cause, but a national one—calling on all Ghanaians to rise in defense of the Constitution and ensure the independence of the judiciary is upheld.

The planned demonstration is expected to see massive participation across major cities, with civil society groups and legal professionals also anticipated to lend their support.
