Mahama directs GES to promote all eligible deputy directors

ACCRA, Ghana – April 25, 2025 — Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has issued a directive for the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors of education, regardless of the availability of offices or formal postings.

The announcement was made on Thursday, April 24, during the launch of a Free Sanitary Pad Distribution Initiative for schoolgirls, aimed at improving menstrual hygiene and boosting female school attendance.

The President’s directive comes in response to growing agitation within the education sector, particularly following threats by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to embark on a strike on April 30 over delays in promotions for lower-ranked teachers.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to give all those deputy directors a legitimate promotion. And even without office, they will still serve in their capacities as directors of GES,” Minister Haruna Iddrisu stated.

He noted that the president was made aware of the concerns during his campaign rounds, where many deputy directors lamented the difficulty in advancing due to lack of office space.

Sanitary Pad Programme to Promote Gender Equality

The Free Pad Intervention, also launched on Thursday, is part of President Mahama’s broader vision to promote gender equality and quality education. The initiative seeks to eliminate menstruation-related barriers that keep girls out of school.

“The president believes no girl should be left behind because of a natural biological process,” the Minister noted.

The programme is designed to:

  • Reduce absenteeism among schoolgirls
  • Support menstrual hygiene management
  • Relieve financial burdens on families
  • Foster a more inclusive learning environment

This new development aligns with President Mahama’s earlier commitment during his State of the Nation Address, where he vowed to tackle factors impeding girls’ education, including access to menstrual products.
