ACCRA, Ghana – April 30, 2025 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced that nearly 30,000 Ghanaian passport applications remain pending, and applicants must complete their processes within 90 days following Ghana’s transition to chip-embedded passports.
In a statement issued today, the Ministry confirmed that the new electronic passport system, which replaces the previous biometric format, officially took effect on April 28, 2025. The updated passports feature a secure electronic microchip that stores the bearer’s biometric and personal information, along with enhanced anti-fraud features in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.
“Those who started the application under the old system are to complete all such pending applications within 90 days,” the Ministry warned.
Of the 30,000 outstanding applications, 7,900 are paid but remain incomplete. The Ministry assured applicants that no additional payment will be required to complete their applications. Applicants have been directed to the newly launched online portal to finalize any incomplete steps.
Individuals with scheduled appointments are to report to their respective Passport Application Centres as planned for biometric capture, while those who missed appointments on April 28 or 29 are being urged to visit the centres to continue their processing.
The Ministry emphasized that no pending application under the old biometric system will be processed after the 90-day deadline, urging all affected Ghanaians to act swiftly.
The switch to chip-based passports is part of Ghana’s broader efforts to modernize travel documentation and enhance security and international mobility.
