Mahama Rules Out ECG Privatisation, Vows Public-Sector Reforms

ACCRA, Ghana – May 1, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has firmly ruled out the privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under his leadership, pledging instead to pursue public-private partnerships to revitalize the power distribution sector.
Speaking at the 2025 May Day celebrations held at Black Star Square in Accra, the President addressed widespread concerns from labour unions and the public over the future of ECG amid its crippling debt burden, which he revealed has ballooned to GH¢68 billion.
“The ECG has been brought to its knees by a culture of poor governance over the last eight years,” President Mahama said. “If we do not take proactive measures, our power system will collapse.”
Despite the financial crisis facing the power utility, Mahama reassured workers and stakeholders that his administration is committed to keeping ECG under public control, focusing instead on reforms that boost operational efficiency.
“Let me assure you that it is not my intention to privatise ECG as an institution,” he declared. “Our attention is more on public-private collaboration to inject efficiency into our downstream electricity distribution system.”
The President also pointed out that enhancing efficiency within ECG is key to lowering electricity tariffs, a growing concern for households and businesses alike.
Mahama’s statement has been welcomed by labour unions and energy sector observers, who have long resisted calls for privatisation, citing the potential for job losses and foreign control over national assets.
