NHIA Office in Berekum East Declared Unsafe, Staff Forced into Temporary Workspace

BEREKUM, Ghana — April 30, 2025 — The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) office in the Berekum East Municipality has been deemed unsafe due to severe structural deterioration, prompting staff to vacate the main building and relocate to a cramped temporary room on the same premises.

The situation has raised serious safety concerns, as years of neglect have left the facility with damaged electrical systems, leaking roofs, and non-functional air conditioners, making working conditions harsh and potentially dangerous.

Speaking to the media, Richard Asomani Appah, Assistant Manager of the office, highlighted the urgent need for intervention to avoid a potential disaster and to ensure continued, effective service delivery to the public.

“We’ve been managing under these unsafe and uncomfortable conditions for a long time. The building is simply not fit for purpose anymore,” Mr. Appah said.

Despite the dire conditions, Member of Parliament for Berekum East, Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, has shown support by donating a desktop computer and four air conditioners—two to the NHIA and two to the local Pensioners Association.

During a recent visit to the facility, the MP pledged to engage the appropriate authorities to facilitate either a comprehensive renovation or a complete rebuild of the NHIA office.

“This is a vital public institution. We cannot allow our health insurance office to crumble. I will do everything I can to get this situation resolved,” Mr. Kyeremeh assured staff and constituents.

In the meantime, clients seeking NHIA services are being directed to the temporary structure, where staff continue to serve the public under difficult circumstances.
