Afenyo-Markin Slams Council of State Over Chief Justice Suspension, Calls for Protest

ACCRA, May 2, 2025Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has strongly criticized the Council of State, accusing it of enabling what he described as a politically motivated and unconstitutional suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of a planned multi-party protest on Monday, May 5, Afenyo-Markin alleged that the Chief Justice’s suspension was part of a coordinated executive-led effort, silently backed by the Council of State, to intimidate the judiciary and weaken its independence.

“The current attacks on the Chief Justice and the broader attempt to politicize the bench must be seen for what they are. And here, our Council of State failed our democracy,” he declared.

Afenyo-Markin said the judiciary was under threat from “deliberate executive interference and political manipulation,” blaming the John Mahama-led government for orchestrating “a systematic and calculated assault” on judicial independence.

“Today what we see is intimidation, political interference and open targeting of judges who are perceived inconvenient and non-compliant. This is not just unacceptable, it is repugnant to good conscience,” he asserted.

He called on Ghanaians across the political divide to participate in the upcoming protest, which he said is intended to defend the constitution, safeguard judicial independence, and uphold the rule of law.

The development adds further tension to Ghana’s political landscape as questions grow over the implications of the Chief Justice’s suspension on the country’s democratic institutions.
