The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly criticised what he describes as increasing attacks on free speech and the rights of party supporters under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
In a statement issued from his office on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia alleged that officers, activists, and supporters of the NPP are being subjected to arrests, detentions, and what he termed “unconscionable bail conditions” since the government assumed office on January 7, 2025.
He cited recent incidents, including the arrest and subsequent release of NPP supporter David Essandoh, who was reportedly detained over comments made on social media about the return of “dumsor,” as well as the remand of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe.
According to him, these developments represent a worrying pattern that threatens democratic freedoms and free expression in the country.
Dr. Bawumia further accused elements within the executive, state investigative agencies, and sections of the judiciary of collaborating to intimidate political opponents and silence dissenting voices.
He stated: “These actions, arrests, detentions, and unconscionable bail conditions have been a persistent feature since they took office.”
The NPP flagbearer described the trend as a “dangerous assault” on Ghana’s democratic credentials and warned that such actions could have long-term consequences for governance and civil liberties.
“I therefore serve notice to officers of the State who are active participants in this unholy enterprise that the day of accountability will come, and the abuse of state power will be accounted for,” he declared.
Dr. Bawumia urged party members and supporters nationwide to remain resolute and continue holding the government accountable despite what he described as attempts at intimidation.
“We fought hard for this democracy, and as a party, we cannot surrender it to intimidation from those who possess temporary power today,” he added.
He stressed that democracy must be protected at all times, adding that political power is temporary and should not be used to suppress opposing voices.
