Ghana Gold Board Extends Licensing Deadline to June 21, 2025, Warns of Legal Consequences for Non-Compliance

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially extended the deadline for transitioning to its new gold trading license regime from May 21, 2025, to June 21, 2025. This decision was announced in a statement signed by the Board’s Media Relations Officer, Prince Minkah.

GoldBod clarified that individuals and entities currently operating under licenses issued by the now-defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources may continue trading under those licenses only until the new deadline. After June 21, 2025, however, only valid GoldBod license holders will be legally authorized to engage in gold purchasing, selling, or dealing activities in Ghana.

“It must be emphasised that even though a person may apply for a GoldBod license beyond the new non-extendable deadline of 21st June, 2025, only holders of a GoldBod license will be allowed to purchase, sell or deal in gold after this date,” the statement noted.

The Board stressed that failure to comply with the new licensing regime after the deadline will constitute an offence under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), with offenders facing legal penalties.

Additionally, effective Thursday, May 22, 2025, all licenses issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will no longer permit gold exports. GoldBod will be the sole entity authorized to export small-scale gold from Ghana moving forward.

“The deadline extension notwithstanding, the GoldBod wishes to inform all persons who hold a license to purchase and deal in gold, issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, that the export function of their licenses has ceased to be valid, effective today, 22nd May, 2025,” the statement read.

This regulatory shift marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to streamline and sanitize the gold trade industry, ensuring transparency and accountability in Ghana’s mineral exports.
