Two Jailed for Stealing Immigration Officer’s Pistol and Ammunition in Walewale

Walewale, May 22, 2025 – The Walewale Circuit Court has sentenced two young men to five years’ imprisonment each with hard labour for stealing a pistol and ammunition belonging to an immigration officer.

The convicts, Mustapha Basit, 18, and Baba Rashid, 22, were found guilty of conspiracy to steal and stealing, and pleaded guilty before Justice Francis Asobayeri during proceedings on Thursday, May 22.

According to police reports, the theft occurred around 12:00 p.m. on May 17, when the two broke into the immigration officer’s room in his absence. They made away with a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition, as well as two CZ rifle magazines, each loaded with 30 rounds.

Law enforcement authorities say preparations are underway to transfer the convicts to begin serving their sentences.

The swift prosecution is being lauded by residents as a deterrent to rising incidents of arms theft and illegal possession of weapons in the area.
