Rotational Nurses and Midwives Declare Nationwide Strike Over 12 Months of Unpaid Allowances

Accra | May 27, 2025 — The Rotational Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana has announced a nationwide strike effective June 2, 2025, in response to the government’s failure to settle 12 months of unpaid allowances.

The Association says despite a 14-working-day ultimatum given to prompt government action, no official communication or commitment has been received from the Ministry of Health or the Ministry of Finance, leaving its members in dire financial straits.

“We Are No Longer Accepting Promises” – Association President

Speaking to Citi News, Association President Ebenezer Boateng voiced strong disappointment over what he described as ongoing neglect and disrespect by authorities.

“The minister has not communicated officially to us, which is very sad. This is because they see us now as insignificant in the health sector, in the ministry, as well as to the public,” Boateng said.

Boateng stressed that the strike will go ahead without delay or further negotiations, stating that the group is tired of unfulfilled assurances after years of similar delays.

“On June 2, we are going on a nationwide strike. We do not want to hear any story from them. This has been a consistent problem for about 5 years now. All they give is an assurance — we don’t need that now,” he added.

Withdrawal of Services Imminent

The Association insists it has been forced to take this action as a last resort, noting that many of its members are unable to support themselves financially, despite working full shifts in various health facilities across the country.

They maintain that no services will be provided unless there are tangible efforts by the government to clear the arrears and commit to timely future payments.

The looming strike could have significant implications for Ghana’s healthcare delivery, especially in rural and peri-urban communities where rotational nurses and midwives provide vital services.
