GPRTU and Transport Unions Warn Drivers to Comply with 15% Fare Reduction or Face Sanctions

Accra | May 25, 2025 — The leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other major commercial transport associations have issued a firm directive to all commercial drivers across the country: comply with the newly announced 15% reduction in transport fares — or face sanctions.
The warning came through a joint press release on Sunday, May 25, 2025, following recent cuts in fuel prices and extensive consultations between transport unions and relevant authorities.
“We urge all drivers to adhere to the fare reduction to avoid sanctions,” the statement emphasized.
The directive, endorsed by the GPRTU, Concerned Drivers Association, and True Drivers Union, aims to ensure the benefits of reduced fuel costs are passed on to commuters.
Public Urged to Report Non-Compliance
In a notable move to boost accountability, the unions encouraged the public to report any drivers who fail to adjust their fares as mandated. Reports can be made either to the nearest transport union office or directly to the police.
“The public is encouraged to report any instances of non-compliance to our offices or to the police,” said Alhaji Abass I. Moro, National P.R.O of the GPRTU.
Background
The 15% reduction follows significant fuel price cuts on the market, prompting authorities and transport operators to initiate talks aimed at easing the burden on commuters. The result is a nationwide fare reduction that drivers are now required to implement without delay.
Transport operators say the move is intended to restore fairness in pricing and maintain public trust in the system.
Call for Cooperation
The unions are now calling on all drivers to comply fully and immediately, reminding them that failure to do so would be met with disciplinary action, including possible suspension or expulsion from their unions.
