Trump Administration Imposes New Travel Bans on 19 Countries, Citing Security Concerns

WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 5, 2025 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced a sweeping new set of travel bans and restrictions targeting 19 countries, citing national security, immigration control, and foreign cooperation shortfalls as justification.

According to statements from the Trump team, the move is aimed at countries with weak traveler vetting systems, alleged harboring of terrorist networks, refusal to accept deported nationals, and excessive visa overstays.

12 Countries Fully Banned

Twelve nations now face a total travel ban to the United States. Among them are seven African countries:

  • Chad
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Libya
  • Republic of the Congo
  • Somalia
  • Sudan

The non-African countries on the full ban list include:

  • Afghanistan
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Myanmar
  • Yemen

7 Countries Face Travel Restrictions

In addition to the outright bans, seven more countries are now subject to strict travel restrictions, particularly impacting visa approvals and travel timelines:

  • Burundi
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo

As well as:

  • Cuba
  • Laos
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuela

The restrictions are expected to affect tourism, family reunification, academic exchanges, and business travel from these regions.

International Reactions

The announcement has sparked immediate criticism from immigration advocates and human rights groups, who argue the move revives and expands policies previously struck down or reversed during the Biden administration. Several governments have also expressed concern over the impact on bilateral relations and diaspora communities.

Trump’s team maintains that the bans are based on an updated risk assessment and compliance review, not racial or religious profiling.

“Our duty is to protect American lives and sovereignty. Countries that fail to meet basic security standards cannot expect open access to our borders,” said a spokesperson for the Trump campaign.

It remains unclear how the new measures might be implemented if Trump does not return to office in 2025, but they signal a renewed focus on hardline immigration policy as a central plank of his campaign platform.
