The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has expressed outrage over the government’s decision to increase the Energy Sector Levy by GH₵1 per litre of fuel, calling it a betrayal of trust—particularly in the wake of an agreed 15% reduction in transport fares.
The Union says the timing of the levy hike is alarming, as it comes just days after commercial drivers across the country implemented the fare reduction, a move that was negotiated in good faith with government representatives.
Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, June 5, the GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer, Abass Imoro, accused the government of deception and lack of transparency.
“They knew very well that they had this under their sleeves, and yet we sat with them, engaged in talks about the 15% fare reduction, and reached a consensus,” Mr Imoro said.
“It is extremely painful because had we known this was coming, we would have taken a different stance. The reduction wouldn’t have been as deep.”
Mr Imoro stressed that commercial drivers are key stakeholders in fuel consumption, and decisions affecting fuel prices must include proper consultation with transport unions. He warned that the levy increase not only nullifies the effect of the fare reduction but also exacerbates the financial strain on drivers and transport operators.
The GPRTU has given the government a deadline of June 10, 2025, to reverse the decision or risk a nationwide strike, which could paralyse public transportation across the country.
“We are major players in the fuel sector, and it is only fair that government engages us before taking such decisions,” Mr Imoro added.
The union’s stance has gained sympathy from many drivers and commuters, with concerns rising over the broader impact of fuel price hikes on transportation costs and general inflation.
