Ghana Chamber of Mines Denies Political Interference in Leadership Changes

Accra, Ghana – June 10, 2025
The Ghana Chamber of Mines has firmly denied allegations that its recent leadership changes were politically motivated, emphasizing its independence and dedication to responsible and sustainable mining.

The new Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, addressed the media in Accra to clarify the nature of the transition, following questions about the timing and motivation behind the appointments.

“There is a transition from telecoms to mines. It is important to state that the two entities are all private member organizations. The Ghana Chamber of Mines is not a state entity,” Dr. Ashigbey said.

“Ahmed has not been appointed with presidential powers from Jubilee House, nor have I been appointed.”

Chamber Reaffirms Focus on Responsible Mining

Dr. Ashigbey reiterated the Chamber’s core mission of advancing responsible mining to drive sustainable national development.

“We work closely with the government, policymakers, regulators — but all in the interest of pushing the mining industry as a catalyst for national development,” he stressed.

Also speaking at the media briefing was Chief Operating Officer Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, who highlighted the Chamber’s priority on policy engagement, especially in the context of Ghana’s emerging lithium mining sector.

“At that point that they (Atlantic Lithium) wanted the lease rectified, the price was around $3,000 but now the price is around $600. They were looking at investing $100 million, now they have to invest about $300 million. So, we will continue to engage so we do it as quickly as we can,” Nantogmah explained.

Commitment to Transparency and Growth

The Chamber’s new leadership emphasized its ongoing efforts to foster a transparent, investor-friendly, and growth-driven mining industry. They assured the public that all initiatives are aligned with international best practices and national interests, especially in maximizing Ghana’s benefit from its mineral wealth.
