President Mahama Hails Ghana’s 5.3% Economic Growth in Q1 2025 as a Sign of Recovery, Calls for PTA Reinstatement

Accra – June 13, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed the 5.3% GDP growth recorded in the first quarter of 2025, describing it as a positive signal of economic recovery and a move toward sustainable prosperity for Ghanaians.
Speaking during a courtesy call by members of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to economic stability, citing the latest data from the Ghana Statistical Service, which indicates an improvement from the 4.9% growth in the same period of 2024.
“The first quarter results have come in at around 5.4%, which indicates that the economy is returning to a normal growth path. This should be viewed as a good sign for us,” he stated.
President Mahama acknowledged the country’s past fiscal challenges, including macroeconomic instability and a weakening cedi, stressing the importance of maintaining a stable environment for investors and businesses.
“An appreciating and stable currency improves our earnings. It is in our interest that the macro economy is stable, our currency is stable, and our economy is growing and delivering prosperity for our people,” he added.
Education and PTA Reform Take Centre Stage
Turning to the education sector, President Mahama expressed concern about the marginalisation of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in recent years and advocated for their full reinstatement in school management, especially at the secondary level.
“I was scandalised by the way PTAs have been marginalised and not allowed to be part of school management,” he said. “The global trend is to grant communities a voice in how their schools are run, and Ghana should be no exception.”
He cited findings from the recent National Education Forum, noting that decentralisation was a key theme raised.
“It is much easier for the Ghana Education Service to supervise and monitor schools at the district level than from the centre. This will be one of the areas we engage with you on,” he added.
President Mahama concluded by reaffirming his belief in collaborative educational governance.
“I firmly believe PTA participation must be fully restored. PTAs must work alongside teachers and school administrators to ensure our schools are well managed and our children receive quality teaching and learning outcomes.”
The remarks come amid broader national efforts to stabilise the economy and reform key public sectors, particularly education, where stakeholders have called for more inclusive and decentralised management structures.
