NPP’s Ahiagbah Calls for Dismissal of Health Minister Akandoh Over GRNMA Strike

Accra, June 14, 2025 — The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has demanded the immediate dismissal of Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, citing what he describes as gross mishandling of the recent strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, June 14, Ahiagbah launched a scathing attack on the Minister’s leadership, stating, “Honourable Kwabena Mintah Akandoh… must go. He should have been gone. He must go. He must go home—leave the Ministry and go home. Completely unacceptable behaviour.”

Ahiagbah recalled Akandoh’s earlier criticisms of former Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu during his tenure as Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee. He noted the irony in Akandoh now failing to address a national crisis after previously accusing others of neglecting localised healthcare issues.

The GRNMA strike, which disrupted healthcare services nationwide for several days, was suspended on Friday, June 13, after Parliament’s Health Committee mediated a resolution with stakeholders. However, Ahiagbah slammed Akandoh for his alleged failure to act decisively, despite early warnings from January and promises to address the nurses’ grievances in the 2025 budget.

“They found all the fiscal space to allocate GH¢2.7 billion for compensation at the Jubilee House, but didn’t prioritise the health of Ghanaians,” Ahiagbah said, criticising the government’s budgetary choices.

He also rebuked the Minister’s proposal to re-engage retired nurses as a temporary measure during the strike, calling it “reckless and insensitive.”

“That kind of hardball he was playing with people’s health was repugnant. People died because of his negligence. For that reason, he must be gone,” Ahiagbah concluded.

The government is yet to issue an official response to Ahiagbah’s remarks.
