North East Region, June 14, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to provide armed escort and protection for vehicles travelling along the Bawku-Pulmakom-Bolgatanga and Walewale-Bolgatanga corridors in a bid to curb insecurity and restore normalcy in the conflict-hit Bawku enclave.
The directive, which took immediate effect, was announced during the President’s Thank You tour in the North East Region on Friday, June 13. President Mahama said the move is part of a broader initiative to protect the movement of goods and people in areas plagued by recent violence and instability.
“As Commander-in-Chief, I have instructed the Armed Forces to provide armed escort and protection to all vehicles travelling within the Bawku area, along the Bawku-Pulmakom-Bolgatanga Corridor, and also along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Corridor,” he stated.
President Mahama noted that the military escort had already yielded positive results, with previously stranded food supply trucks reaching their destinations safely following the intervention.
In his remarks, the President also acknowledged the efforts of traditional leaders in mediating peace in the area. He commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Nayiri, King of Mamprugu, for their roles in advancing reconciliation and conflict resolution.
“I was last week with His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and he briefed me on the progress being made to achieve a lasting peace in Bawku. I want to thank my father, the Nayiri, for the important roadmap to peace that he presented for consideration by the Otumfuo,” President Mahama said.
He expressed optimism that the combined efforts of traditional authority and state security would soon yield sustainable peace in the troubled Bawku region.
The Bawku conflict, which stems from deep-rooted ethnic tensions, has led to recurring violence, resulting in casualties, displacement of residents, and disruption of commerce in Ghana’s Upper East Region.
