Accra, June 14, 2025 — Waste management giant Zoomlion Ghana Limited has clarified that its contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) under the Street Sweeping Programme expired naturally in September 2024, following a six-month extension, and was not cancelled or terminated by the government as some media outlets have claimed.
In a statement responding to a June 11, 2025 letter from the Office of the President, Zoomlion emphasized that the agreement reached its natural conclusion and that the Presidency did not declare a termination of the contract.
“The contract has therefore reached its natural conclusion and expired,” Zoomlion explained. “Contrary to claims in some media reports, this expiration does not constitute a termination or cancellation.”
The Presidency’s letter, issued after a petition by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, stated that the contract would not be renewed and that future sanitation engagements would go through competitive tendering. It also confirmed plans to audit all payments made to Zoomlion after the contract’s expiration and improve the welfare of sanitation workers.
Zoomlion has welcomed these reforms, declaring its full support for the government’s push for transparency and accountability in the sanitation sector.
“Zoomlion Ghana Limited fully supports and welcomes this approach,” the statement read. “We are well prepared and eager to actively participate in any forthcoming competitive procurement processes.”
The company further highlighted that the now-expired YEA contract was itself competitively procured in 2019, and it remains committed to upholding high operational standards.
Zoomlion also responded positively to the government’s plans to audit post-contract payments:
“As a responsible corporate entity, transparency, integrity, and delivering value for money are core to our operations.”
On the welfare of sanitation workers, the company reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring dignified and sustainable livelihoods for the workforce, aligning with the government’s agenda to improve remuneration.
The company also clarified that the Presidency’s directive does not affect its other existing contracts or partnerships with YEA or other state agencies.
Zoomlion concluded the statement by expressing its continued commitment to Ghana’s development and support for the government’s “RESET” agenda.
“Our shared goal remains to build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Ghana for the benefit of all citizens,” it said.
The company noted growing continental interest in its model, with 24 African nations reportedly engaging in discussions and feasibility studies to replicate Zoomlion’s sanitation systems.
