Galamsey Fight Doomed Without Accountability – Martin Kpebu Warns

Accra, June 21, 2025 — Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has issued a stark warning that Ghana’s battle against illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—will continue to falter unless deep-rooted complicity and corruption within the system are decisively addressed.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, June 20, Kpebu said that the persistent failure to enforce mining laws and prosecute offenders reflects a systemic breakdown driven by rogue actors within state institutions.

“You will not find everybody conforming. No. You will find people who will always want to be deviants; it is the nature of things,” he remarked.

Ongoing Galamsey in Ashanti Region Exposed

The legal expert’s comments follow shocking revelations by JoyNews journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, who reported ongoing illegal mining activities in the Ashanti Region, despite a series of government interventions.

Erastus’ investigation pointed to official complicity, including the involvement of some public officials, security operatives, and local leaders who are allegedly enabling the continuation of galamsey operations.

“Push for Prosecutions, Not Just Promises”

Kpebu urged civil society and the media to demand deeper investigations and actual prosecutions, instead of settling for promises and half-hearted government statements.

“As for people doing what they are doing, it is expected. In human nature, you will always find deviants. What we must do is hold them accountable,” he said.

He called for more robust legal frameworks, the removal of saboteurs within enforcement agencies, and greater political will to confront the entrenched interests that profit from illegal mining.

A National Crisis of Environmental Collapse

The interview adds to mounting public outcry over the degradation of forests, farmlands, and rivers across Ghana, driven by illegal mining. The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) recently demanded a state of emergency, the repeal of LI 2462, and full military deployment in affected areas.

With key voices like Kpebu now demanding urgent prosecution of offenders, pressure continues to mount on the government to match rhetoric with action.
