Accra, June 24, 2025 — The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that concrete steps are being taken to address the ongoing concerns of newly posted teachers from the 2022 batch, who staged a protest on Monday, June 23, over unpaid salaries and delays in receiving staff identification numbers.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, GES disclosed that the Ministry of Education has formally requested an extension of expired financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to facilitate the payment of nearly ten months’ salary arrears and the issuance of staff IDs.
Over 2,600 Teachers Affected
Out of 12,807 graduates posted in September 2024, a total of 2,113 teachers have not been paid despite being issued staff IDs. An additional 582 have not received IDs at all due to inconsistencies in Ghana Card details, SSNIT numbers, and instances of self-reposting.
The Service explained that these irregularities were detected during a nationwide staff validation exercise conducted in March 2025, prompting a reassessment of documentation and recruitment processes.
Joint Technical Committee Established
To address the issues effectively, GES revealed that a technical committee, which includes representatives from the aggrieved teachers, has been formed to enhance communication and ensure transparency throughout the resolution process.
Call for Calm and Unified Representation
GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, appealed to the affected teachers to remain calm, assuring them of the Service’s commitment to resolving the matter as swiftly as possible.
“Significant progress has already been made,” the statement read. “We are not only tackling the immediate salary and ID issues but also implementing long-term reforms to avoid such problems in the future.”
The Service also acknowledged that fragmented representation among teacher advocacy groups has complicated communication, urging stakeholders to adopt a unified front to help expedite ongoing processes.
Budgetary Support Confirmed
GES further confirmed that a dedicated budgetary allocation has been included in the 2025 national budget to support the payment of salary arrears and related administrative processes.
The GES’s latest communication comes just a day after the teachers’ spokesperson, Eric Darfuor, announced a temporary suspension of picketing following assurances from the GES that payments would begin by the end of July 2025.
