NIA Assures Staff of Full Payment of Arrears by August Following Strike Resolution

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has assured its staff that all outstanding Operational Support Allowance arrears owed from January to June 2025 will be fully paid by August.

This assurance comes in the wake of the resumption of operations on June 30, following an indefinite strike by staff over the delayed payments. The strike had disrupted services at the NIA for several days.

Speaking to Citi News, the NIA’s Head of Media Relations, Dorah Badu Acheampong, stated that arrangements have been made for the arrears to be cleared in two phases.

“The arrears from January to June will be paid in July. But as was in the statement, in July and August the staff should expect the arrears to be paid,” she confirmed.

Background to the Strike

The strike action, declared over unpaid allowances, forced the temporary suspension of NIA operations nationwide. It was initiated despite objections from the National Labour Commission (NLC), which deemed the action unlawful on the grounds that divisional unions lack the legal mandate to declare strikes.

In a directive issued on Friday, June 27, the NLC ordered the staff to return to work and urged the parties involved—including the Ministry of Finance—to resolve the matter amicably.

Return to Normalcy

Following this intervention and subsequent stakeholder engagements, NIA staff have since returned to their posts, and services have resumed fully across all centres.

The Authority has pledged its commitment to ensuring the timely settlement of allowances and restoring confidence among its workforce, while urging staff to remain dedicated to serving the public.
