Kosi Dedey Blasts Ghana Bar Association for “Flip-Flopping” Amid Chief Justice Suspension Controversy

Accra, July 2, 2025 — Engineer and policy analyst Kosi Dedey has delivered a stinging rebuke to the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) and other professional bodies, accusing them of inconsistency and selective advocacy in the wake of the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Dedey criticised the GBA for what he described as a failure to uphold professional integrity and accountability at a time when the nation faces serious legal and governance challenges.

“Professional bodies in this country, not just the Ghana Bar Association, have failed this country. We cannot be flip-flopping like that. We need to be consistent if we want the profession to be respected,” Dedey said.

Judicial Suspension Sparks National Debate

His comments come amid intense public discourse following the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo, which has sharply divided political, legal, and civil society groups across Ghana.

The GBA recently called for a review of the suspension during the 43rd commemoration of Martyrs’ Day, an event held annually to honour three murdered High Court judges: Justices Frederick Opoku Sarkodie, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong.

At the event, GBA President Effua Ghartey warned that the suspension could erode judicial independence and urged authorities to reconsider the decision to protect the integrity of the judiciary.

Dedey: GBA’s Stance Lacks Credibility

However, Dedey challenged the GBA’s moral authority, arguing that its advocacy lacks credibility due to what he sees as inconsistent positions on major national issues.

“Political parties need to be consistent on matters of policy. They need to do right and behave well with the people. Our professional bodies also need to act properly and stop misbehaving and flip-flopping when it suits them,” he asserted.

He further accused political actors of treating national concerns with partisan lenses, lamenting what he sees as a broader decay in public accountability and ethical leadership across institutions.

The controversy surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension continues to dominate national conversation, with stakeholders awaiting clarity on the next steps and the broader implications for the country’s legal and democratic framework.
