Seth Acheampong Warns EC Against Yielding to NDC Pressure Over Ablekuma North Rerun

Former Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Acheampong, has issued a strong caution to the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana, urging it not to succumb to what he termed as political intimidation from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

His warning comes in response to the EC’s decision to conduct a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency, following disputes from the December 7, 2024, general elections.

In an interview reacting to the EC’s July 2 press release, Mr. Acheampong questioned whether the Commission had reversed its earlier position due to political pressure from the NDC.

“Not too long ago, the Chairman of the National Democratic Congress threatened the EC, saying they were not fit for purpose. So I don’t know if they lost their spine because of that statement, maybe that’s why they’re making a U-turn on their earlier submission to Parliament. I am at a loss,” he remarked.

Background to the Dispute

The controversy arose after the NDC rejected the results from 37 polling stations, alleging that scanned Pink Sheets used during collation were unverifiable and had been provided by the NPP. The party demanded a complete rerun in those polling stations.

However, the NPP countered that only three polling stations remained uncollated and maintained that the scanned results were duly verified by both party agents. The EC later clarified that the original Pink Sheets were destroyed after a violent incident at the collation centre, forcing the use of scanned copies.

EC’s Position and Rerun Plan

According to the EC, the decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations followed a meeting with both parties, aimed at resolving the dispute and restoring public confidence in the process.

Despite this, Mr. Acheampong accused the EC of showing weakness and warned:

“If the NDC decides to walk you out of your office, they are determined, and they will do it no matter what you do. So stand your ground and do the responsible thing.”

The rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025. The EC has pledged to conduct the process transparently, while the Ghana Police Service has been tasked with maintaining security during the exercise.
