Ghana Honours Indian PM Narendra Modi as Mahama Calls for Deeper Bilateral Ties

In a landmark diplomatic gesture, President John Dramani Mahama has conferred one of Ghana’s highest honours — Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana — on visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in recognition of India’s longstanding partnership with Ghana.

The award was presented during a brief but symbolic ceremony at the Jubilee House in Accra on Wednesday, July 2, highlighting the growing importance of Ghana-India relations.

Prime Minister Modi, in his acceptance speech, described the award as not only a personal honour but also a responsibility to further deepen cooperation between the two nations.

“This recognition is a symbol of our shared history, friendship, and a responsibility that India carries in enhancing its partnership with Ghana,” Modi said.

Focus on Trade, Energy, and Youth Empowerment

During high-level talks and a joint press conference, President Mahama laid out Ghana’s ambitions for a renewed bilateral agenda centered on trade, agriculture, renewable energy, technology, and youth empowerment.

“We agreed on the urgency of deepening our collaboration in areas of shared strategic interest, particularly in agriculture, agribusiness, renewable energy, digital innovation, health, and youth empowerment,” Mahama stated.

India has played a pivotal role in Ghana’s development, providing concessional financing, technical assistance, and infrastructure investments. Some key projects include:

  • Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT
  • Elmina Fish Processing Plant
  • Komenda Sugar Factory
  • Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project

These initiatives have strengthened Ghana’s industrial base and advanced its digital and transport sectors.

A New Era in Ghana–India Relations

The visit, which marks a high point in diplomatic relations, signals strong commitment from both sides to advance governmental and private sector cooperation.

As their meeting concluded, both leaders sent a clear message: Ghana and India are poised to unlock new opportunities together, driven by a shared vision of inclusive growth, innovation, and mutual respect.
