Afenyo-Markin Rebuts ECG Leadership Criticism from Dr. Wereko-Brobbey

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has firmly rejected recent criticism from former Volta River Authority (VRA) CEO Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, who accused him of poor leadership during his tenure as Board Chair of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Dr. Wereko-Brobbey, in an interview on TV3, claimed Afenyo-Markin must account for ECG’s financial losses during his time at the company, accusing him of hypocrisy after Afenyo-Markin criticised the government over new tax levies under the amended Energy Sector Levies Act, 2025, which takes effect on July 16, 2025.

In response, Afenyo-Markin issued a detailed statement describing the allegations as “most unfortunate” and “factually inaccurate,” stressing that he only served as Board Chair from July 17, 2024, to January 2025.

Key Clarifications by Afenyo-Markin

  • He stated he was appointed after the period in question and chaired his first board meeting on July 31, 2024.
  • He dismissed any links to ECG’s 2023 losses as “misleading” and clarified that his tenure focused on procurement reforms, loss reduction, and metering upgrades.
  • Among his reforms, he cited the abolition of the practice where payments were made based on port deliveries without verification, replacing it with a system where payments are made only after confirmed deliveries to ECG facilities.
  • He also prioritised prepaid metering expansion to curb losses from obsolete meters and illegal connections, while ensuring that Independent Power Producers (IPPs) were paid during his tenure.

On Energy Levies and Tariffs

Afenyo-Markin reiterated his opposition to the new GH¢1 Energy Sector Levy and recent electricity tariff hikes under the current administration, insisting Ghana’s energy challenges stem from inefficiencies—not revenue shortfalls.

He stressed that less than 30% of ECG’s electricity consumers pay their bills, and that frequent tariff hikes without addressing systemic issues are misguided.

Challenge to Wereko-Brobbey

Afenyo-Markin challenged Dr. Wereko-Brobbey to publicly present evidence of any wrongdoing, urging national focus on reforms instead of partisan attacks.

“Your comments are unfortunate and do not reflect the spirit of constructive national discourse. If you possess evidence, I challenge you to present it publicly,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to non-partisan reforms for ECG and the energy sector at large.
