Ghana’s Energy Ministry Announces Boost in Natural Gas Supply, Assures Stable Power

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced a major increase in Ghana’s natural gas supply, led by ENI, one of the country’s key gas suppliers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, July 9, by Ministry spokesperson Richmond Rockson, it was disclosed that ENI will raise its natural gas supply by 30 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), starting Sunday, July 13, 2025. This will push the total national gas supply to 270 MMscfd.

The Ministry described the move as a “strategic upgrade” aimed at strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure and enhancing energy security.

“This strategic upgrade is a key step in bolstering our energy infrastructure and ensuring a reliable energy supply for the nation,” the Ministry stated.

Temporary Export Suspension for Upgrade

As part of the process, ENI will temporarily suspend gas exports to facilitate the upgrade. The Ministry acknowledged that this could affect gas availability for power generation during the upgrade period but assured the public that steps have been taken to minimise any potential power disruptions.

“The Ministry, in collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector, has proactively implemented comprehensive measures to mitigate any potential disruptions,” the statement noted.

Mitigation Measures in Place

To cushion the impact, the Ministry says it has instituted enhanced power monitoring systems and contingency plans.

“We are confident that these proactive steps will effectively manage the transition and maintain a stable power supply for all citizens,” it added.

Broader Context

This announcement follows earlier reports of scheduled maintenance on ENI’s facilities, which Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, warned could cause temporary power interruptions.

However, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining energy reliability throughout the process, urging public cooperation and understanding as Ghana works toward a “stable and sustainable energy future.”
