Mahama Ayariga Condemns Military Over Statue Demolition and Brutality in Bawku

Bawku, Ghana – July 14, 2025

Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has issued a strong condemnation of the Ghana Armed Forces over recent actions in Bawku, including the demolition of a culturally significant statue and alleged acts of brutality against civilians.

In a statement released on Sunday, Mr. Ayariga expressed outrage over the destruction of a statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, reportedly carried out by military personnel. The statue is a revered symbol among the Kusaug people, and its demolition has further fueled tensions in the already volatile region.

“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran… by some military personnel,” the MP stated. “This only deepens tensions and undermines peace efforts in the area.”

The MP also criticized what he described as the military’s excessive use of force during operations on July 13, 2025. Eyewitness accounts and reports have emerged of civilians being assaulted by uniformed personnel during a security sweep.

While decrying military actions, Mr. Ayariga also condemned a violent gun attack allegedly carried out by an unidentified youth on a vehicle reportedly under military escort, stressing the need for all sides to exercise restraint.

“The youth of Kusaug must not retaliate,” Ayariga urged, warning that violence could worsen the fragile security situation. He also hinted at possible infiltration of the armed forces by individuals with political motives seeking to destabilize the region.

Calling for immediate government intervention, the Bawku Central MP urged national leadership to take swift action. “The government must take urgent steps to investigate and restore peace,” he said, extending condolences to families affected by the unrest.

Bawku continues to grapple with security challenges, including intercommunal tensions and violent incidents involving state forces and local groups. The latest developments have prompted fresh appeals for peace and accountability from various quarters.
