Government Launches $85 Million STRIP Renewable Energy Project to Power Remote and Island Communities

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has unveiled a landmark renewable energy project designed to deliver clean, reliable power to tens of thousands of Ghanaians living in remote and island communities.

Speaking during a sector performance update on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Mr. Jinapor announced that the Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme (STRIP) was officially launched on May 30, 2025. The project is backed by $85 million in grant funding from the African Development Bank, Climate Investment Fund, Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and the Government of Ghana.

“The ministry has launched the Ghana Scaling Up Renewable Energy Programme, known as STRIP, and we did it on 30th May 2025,” the Minister said. “This project is funded with an 85 million grant from our development partners and the Government of Ghana.”

Key components of STRIP include:

  • 12,000 solar PV NEC meter systems for households
  • 35 mini-grids to supply electricity to over 70,000 people in 47 island communities
  • 1,450 solar home systems for off-grid households and public facilities

The project marks a significant step in Ghana’s transition to renewable energy and aligns with the government’s broader green agenda. It also addresses critical access gaps by targeting hard-to-reach communities that have long remained outside the national grid.

By scaling up solar energy infrastructure, STRIP is expected to enhance energy equity, improve livelihoods, and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, positioning Ghana as a regional leader in sustainable energy solutions.
