Titus Glover Calls for Honest Dialogue, Unity to Resolve Bawku Conflict

Tema, July 29, 2025 — Former Deputy Transport Minister and Member of Parliament for Tema East, Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, has urged the government and stakeholders to prioritise honest, trust-based dialogue to address the protracted conflict in Bawku and its surrounding areas.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Glover emphasized the need for a sincere national conversation focused on the root causes of the conflict and not just its symptoms. He highlighted the significance of promoting forgiveness and inter-ethnic unity, especially as many of the affected communities are intermarried.

“For the Bawku conflict to end will depend on how we manage the root causes, engage in honest dialogue, and encourage forgiveness. Many of the tribes involved have intermarried, so this conflict should not be allowed to escalate further,” he said.

Mr. Glover supported the government’s decision to deploy military forces to the area, calling the situation a serious national security threat, but expressed concern over the 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew imposed on Nalerigu by the Ministry of the Interior. He noted that the curfew severely affects farming livelihoods, which form the backbone of the local economy.

He also urged political leaders to avoid exploiting the crisis for partisan gain, pointing to past remarks by former President John Mahama, who allegedly blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for fueling tensions.

“We must be careful with our statements. National issues like this should not be politicized—we need to focus on finding a lasting solution,” he added.

His comments come in the wake of a tragic shooting on Saturday, July 26, in which two male students from Nalerigu Senior High School were gunned down by unidentified assailants. The attack has deepened tensions and triggered swift government response.

On Sunday, July 27, the government began evacuating students from both Bawku and Nalerigu, while military deployments were reinforced to restore calm and prevent further bloodshed.

Security experts have long argued that without a comprehensive peace-building framework, including community dialogue, economic development, and justice mechanisms, such interventions will offer only temporary relief.
