Two suspected armed robbers killed in Atebubu highway shootout with police

Two suspected armed robbers have been shot dead following a gun battle with officers of the Ghana Police Service during an anti-robbery operation at Atebubu in the Bono East Region.

According to a police statement posted on Facebook, the incident occurred on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, when a police patrol team encountered a robbery in progress along the Atebubu highway.

Upon spotting the officers, the suspects opened fire, prompting a swift exchange of gunfire. Two of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

The rest of the robbery gang fled into the nearby bush, and a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of a loaded short gun with two live cartridges, four spent cartridges, and a machete.

The Police Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring the public of continued efforts to clamp down on violent crimes and highway robberies.
